How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

The right interval depends on the type of cut you have. Here is a guide by cut type, and what to ask your barber.

How often you should get a haircut depends mostly on the type of cut you have.

A skin fade has the shortest lifespan. The gradient that defines the cut only lasts about two weeks. By the third week the transition has grown in, and the result is simply short hair. If you want a skin fade to look like a skin fade, plan on a haircut every two to three weeks.

A scissor cut with length on top lasts much longer. It is designed to grow through a range of lengths rather than sit at one, and a good scissor cut will look intentional for six to eight weeks. Some clients go as long as ten weeks between scissor cuts.

A taper falls in the middle. Four to five weeks is a reasonable interval. It is long enough that you are not in the chair constantly and short enough that the neckline stays clean.

The neckline shows growth first

The top of your head can carry several weeks of growth without looking untidy. The neckline cannot. It is the first area to look overgrown, and it is often what other people notice first, even if they cannot say why.

Keeping the neckline tidy between full haircuts helps a cut look fresh for longer. Ask your barber what they recommend for your cut.

What to ask your barber

At your next appointment, ask your barber how long your specific cut will hold its shape and which part will grow out first. An experienced barber will give you a clear answer.

If you cannot come in every three weeks, tell your barber before the cut. They can choose a style that grows out well rather than one that only looks right for a few days.
